Hey I could even upload them as I make them (or are requested) and upload to the internet leaving a post here with the map code name and link so people could search and download them rather than having to do it them selves.
When I first figured it out I briefly toyed with the idea of preping the KML/KMZ file for every map and making it all available for downlaod - Except that would have been 65Gb So it'll have to be on a use by use basis. Hopefully with a bit of help I can get the process sorted and post up a nice how-to here. I did one a while back and found that each topo50 fits nicely on one microSD card but then I promptly forgot the process. Someone wrote a program to do the job too as I recall but I'm blowed if I can locate any of this stuff.
Note that custom maps are not routable (more on routes versus tracks here). Once your custom map is open in Garmin Basecamp you can mark waypoints and draw tracks using it. You can also create your own Garmin Custom Maps. You can download Garmin Custom Maps from the Garmin Custom Maps forum, or from other websites. You can also send Garmin Custom Maps to supported Garmin devices. The map will overlay onto whatever other maps you have loaded. You can import Garmin Custom Maps, including KML overlays and KMZ overlay archives. I know you have to get them into KMZ/KML format but other than that I'm lost (Garmins help is based on google earth rectification which is unnessasary and also they dont doesnt include the optimal tile number and other settings relevent for the good old LINZ topo50 files. Simply drag the KMZ custom map file that yo created in Step 1 into Garmin Basecamp to open it. I wanted to make one for a friend who just got one but I cant find a simple how-to based on the downloadable geotiffs from LINZ
